What’s the Difference Between BOTOX®, Dysport®, XEOMIN® & Jeuveau™?

Portrait of a woman who has had injectable treatments by a board certified plastic surgeon and is happy.Cosmetic injectable treatments are more popular than ever. In 2018 alone, over 7 million people received a treatment involving botulinum toxin type A—the active ingredient that helps smooth wrinkles and minimize fine lines. There are many formulations of this common neuromodulator. BOTOX Cosmetic, Dysport, XEOMIN, and Jeuvaeu are the options offered at our Lexington and Louisville locations.

All of these products are known for their consistent, satisfying results. But patients might still find themselves confused and overwhelmed by so many different injectable choices. This blog post will give a brief explanation of these well-known brands and discuss each of their defining qualities.

BOTOX

BOTOX is the most popular cosmetic injectable in the world. After hitting the aesthetic market in 2002, this FDA-approved treatment has become famous for fighting the early signs of aging. BOTOX is commonly used for treating “dynamic wrinkles,” such as forehead and frown lines. The active ingredient temporarily relaxes muscles, creating a more relaxed and youthful appearance. Because it works by limiting the movement of facial muscles that cause wrinkles to form, BOTOX can also help prevent deep wrinkles from forming in the first place.

Patients usually come in for BOTOX treatments every 3 to 4 months. The procedure itself can take as little as 15 minutes, depending on the variety of areas being treated.

Dysport

Dysport is made from the same purified protein as BOTOX and other muscle relaxers. It was approved in 2009 by the FDA as an anti-wrinkle treatment. It can treat many of the same concerns, such as brow creases and other fine lines. It is often strategically injected in 1 of 5 points between and above the eyebrows. Dysport also has a slightly different formulation than other brands, meaning it can be a better option for certain patients. One specific difference is that Dysport tends to diffuse, or spread to other areas, more than BOTOX.

Improvement can usually be seen 2 to 3 days after treatment, which is typically shorter than the time it takes to see results following BOTOX injections. A Dysport session lasts 10 to 20 minutes and can improve the appearance of lines for up to 4 months.

XEOMIN

XEOMIN is another FDA-approved option for reducing the formation of facial wrinkles. But, unlike BOTOX and Dysport, XEOMIN does not contain any additives. Its formula can help treat lines caused by frowning or squinting your eyes. Relaxing these lines can help create a more rested, rejuvenated look.

Results from XEOMIN typically appear more gradually than those from other brands. Visible smoothing can appear in less than a week, with results lasting up to 3 months.

Jeuveau

Jeuveau is the latest addition to the family of cosmetic injectables. As the first new neuromodulator in nearly 10 years, it is an excellent addition to any aesthetic regimen. Jeuveau is similar to other injectables in that it relaxes muscles to prevent the formation of deep lines. However, it is the first neuromodulator to be developed specifically for aesthetic treatments. While options like BOTOX can be used for other reasons (such as treating migraines, easing muscle spasms) Jeuveau strictly targets issues such as crow’s feet and eyebrow creases.

Many of our patients are seeing visible results in as few as 2 to 3 days. However, it is important to note that full results will develop over 7 to 10 days and last for up to 3 to 5 months.
