What’s Involved in the Laser Hair Removal Process?

If you’re considering laser hair removal, understanding the process will help you make your decision and plan for your treatment. A consultation here at CaloSpa® will provide the most accurate, personalized information when preparing for laser hair removal. But this post will give you a general idea of what to expect from your experience.

Treatment Starts With a Plan

While patients are often looking to target similar areas, such as the underarms and bikini areas for women and the back and shoulders for men, laser hair removal isn’t a “one-size-fits-all” treatment. Some treatment sites are larger than others, and patients may have thinner or thicker hair in a treatment site to begin with. Your Clinical Aesthetician takes all this into consideration when developing a treatment plan that works for you.

Your First Laser Hair Removal Treatment

You’ll be advised to avoid waxing or plucking for 4 to 6 weeks before treatment, as the hair follicles need to be intact. You should shave 24 hours before the procedure.

A topical anesthetic may be applied 20 to 30 minutes before treatment to minimize discomfort. You’ll be given protective eyewear to use during the treatment.

The laser settings are adjusted based on the treatment area, skin color, and hair thickness. At CaloSpa®, we use a two-laser system, combining the Sciton® Bare HR™ and LUMENIS® LightSheer to achieve the best possible result.

Your aesthetician guides the device over the treatment area where it targets follicles with pulses of light. The light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicles, which damages or destroys them. A cold gel or cooling device may be used to protect the skin. Most treatments are completed in an hour or less.

Recovery/After Care

It is normal to experience some redness and warmth in the treatment areas, similar to a mild sunburn. Cold compresses or moisturizers may improve comfort, and it’s best to avoid doing anything irritating to your skin such as scrubbing it or wearing tight clothing for about a week. You should protect the treated areas from the sun for up to a month.

Treated hairs will shed in the days and weeks following treatment.

Your Subsequent Treatments

Because hair follicle growth is cyclical, successful laser hair removal treatment requires multiple sessions. At any given time, some follicles in a treatment area will be dormant. Those dormant follicles will emerge within about 4 weeks on the face and 6 weeks on the body, which is the typical amount of time between laser hair removal sessions. Overall, we generally recommend 8 sessions for optimal results.

Future Maintenance

It’s important to us that the result we achieve for you is thorough — and thoroughly satisfying, too. Sometimes, that means we may need to account for any unwanted hair follicles that emerge a bit later than we anticipated.

Accordingly, should you decide to commit to laser hair removal treatments at CaloSpa®, you’ll receive unlimited treatments every 4 weeks (face) or 6 weeks (body) for up to a full year. It’s our way of making sure we achieve your best possible result.
